Mass density in stars versus redshift

Mass density in stars versus redshift. A clear decline with redshift in stellar mass locked up in the most massive galaxies is observed, but surprisingly, the massive galaxies do not decline more rapidly than the whole population. The GDDS points are represented by the filled circles with horizontal and vertical error bars. Theoretical models of hierarchical galaxy formation are plotted as full lines. The GDDS finds the number of massive galaxies almost 100 times higher than predicted by the models.
