Bernadette Rodgers is Gemini South Head of Science Operations at Gemini South in La Serena. She obtained a PhD in Astronomy at the University of Washington in 2000 and came to Gemini as a Science Fellow shortly thereafter, in August 2000. Bernadette received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware in 1984 and a Masters of Science in Physics from New York University in 1990. Before going into astronomy, she worked in the space industry for several years, first with Department of Defense satellites and then Space Shuttle science missions at NASA Ames Research Center. Bernadette's research is primarily related to star formation including intermediate-mass young stars and binary systems, circumstellar disks and disk activity as observed through optical and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Ruben Diaz is a Science Fellow at Gemini Observatory in Chile. He obtained a PhD in astronomy in August 2004 at the National University of Cordoba, under Profs. Horacio Dottori (Brazil) and Gustavo Carranza (Argentina). He has worked several years at Cordoba Observatory as teacher, also in charge of the Public Outreach Brand and of the Bosque Alegre Telescope. His research interests are broadly extended in extragalactic astronomy, and recently focused in the fueling mechanisms of activity in galaxies.
German Gimeno
Assistant Scientist
La Serena, CL
641
German is an Assistant Scientist at Gemini Observatory, and is the GMOS-S instrument scientist since 2011. He was previously the Phoenix instrument scientist also at Gemini South. He earned a PhD in Astronomy from Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, Argentina; under the guidance of Drs. Gustavo Carranza and Ruben Diaz. He had worked at Cordoba Observatory as support astronomer and telescope operator at the Bosque Alegre 1.54m telescope between 1997 and 2002. He also taught Optics and Galactic Structure at the undergraduate level at Cordoba University. His main interests are astronomical instrumentation and extragalactic astronomy, in particular galaxy dynamics and interactions, and compact groups of galaxies.
Percy Gomez
Associate Scientist
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205696
Percy Gomez is an Assistant Astronomer at Gemini South. He received his BS in Physics from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica (Lima, Peru) and his PhD in Astronomy from New Mexico State University. He held two postdoctoral positions, one at Rutgers University and another one at Carnegie Mellon University, before joining Gemini North in 2003. He relocated to Gemini South in 2006. His research focuses on the study of the evolution and physical properties of clusters of galaxies.
Pascale Hibon
Science Fellow
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205680
Pascale Hibon joined Gemini as a Science Fellow in June 2011. Pascale obtained her PhD from Université Aix-Marseille I in 2007 after a 2-yr student internship at ESO in Santiago, Chile. After that she held two Research Fellow appointments, at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study and Arizona State University, before coming to Gemini South. Pascale's research area focuses on narrowband searches for very high redshift galaxies, which has led her to observe on several of the world's largest telescopes.
Steve Margheim
Assistant Scientist
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205694
Steven Margheim is an Assistant Scientist at Gemini South and is the bHROS Instrument Scientist. Steve obtained his B.S. in Astronomy from Villanova University, and then attended Indiana University for his Ph.D. under the supervision of Constantine Deliyannis, before joining Gemini Observatory in 2005. His research interests include chemical abundance analysis with high-resolution spectroscopy of various stellar populations including open clusters, stars with planets, and metal-poor stars.

Peter Pessev
Gemini Science Fellow
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205668
Peter Pessev is a Gemini Science Fellow at Gemini South. He joined the team of the Observatory in 2008 after obtaining a PhD degree from Sofia University, Bulgaria. Prior to that Peter worked for three years (2005-2008) at the STScI under the supervision of Dr. Paul Goudfrooij on a project focused on the multi-wavelength integrated-light properties of simple stellar populations. His scientific interests include the star cluster system of the Magellanic Clouds, integrated-light properties of simple stellar populations, testing and calibration of the SSP models.

Fredrik Rantakyro
Associate Scientist
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205665
After receiving his PhD in Astrophysics at Gothenburg University in 1994, Fredrik has worked at three post doctoral positions: Network Scientist for the European VLBI Network in Bologna (CNR), ESO Fellow at the Swedish European Sub-mm Telescope (SEST), and Staff Astronomer at the VLTI in Paranal where he was Instrument Scientist for AMBER (a near infrared instrument capable of combining the light from three telescopes). Fredrik now joins Gemini South as an Associate Scientist.
Mischa Schirmer
Science Fellow
La Serena, CL
+56 (51) 205667
Mischa is a Science Fellow at Gemini South. He obtained his PhD from the University of Bonn, Germany, in 2004. His first post-doc was with the Isaac Newton of Telescopes in La Palma, Spain, where he worked for four years as support astronomer and instrument scientist for a near-infrared imaging spectrograph. He then returned to Bonn University for a pure research position, and joined Gemini in May 2011. Scientifically, Mischa focuses on fossil groups and (super)clusters of galaxies. Peculiar AGNs, tidal stellar streams and other low surface brightness creatures also get attention. On the technical side he's developing automatised data reduction schemes for optical and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy. During his spare time Mischa loves to do astrophotography using self-made telescopes.
