New Items for Semester 2014B
New Phase 1 Tool (PIT)
The only major change in the 2014B PIT is the inclusion of support for Large and Long Program proposals. Additional support for new and visiting instruments has also been added.
As in recent semesters:
- PIs are strongly encouraged to include or attach representative ITC output to the submitted pdf.
- A single proposal, with the same science goal, can request any combination of the instruments available at either telescope. The PI and TAC are not able to specify the time required at each telescope however, and so PIs are requested to make this clear in their Technical Case, and it would be helpful at the ITAC in the NTACs specify the time recommend at each telescope using the NTAC comments area in the PIT.
- As part of the Band 3 Information section, applicable PIs have been asked to give the Band 3 request for each partner and/or telescope, if the Band 3 allocation request is different from their standard request.
A minimum of 5 classical nights are available on Subaru in semester 2014B. Instrument availability is summarized in the Gemini 2014B Call, as well as the Subaru 14B Call. In 14B, PIs in the Gemini community who intend to use the Subaru telescope are encouraged to apply through the time-exchange program and not through the open use Subaru Call. Similarly, Subaru request that Japanese PIs with direct access to Gemini not request time on Gemini via the Subaru exchange program.
No Keck exchange time is offered in 2014B.
General target accessibility limits for 2014B are, for Gemini North 17 < RA hours < 13.5 and -37 < dec degrees < +90, and for Gemini South 16 < RA < 12 and -90 < dec < +28. There are additional constraints if a program requires unrestricted access (e.g. MOS pre-imaging, long observations or observations with strict constraints), or the laser AO system at Gemini North or South. GPI also has additional declination restrictions, due to a maximum zenith distance of 40 degrees. GPI targets are also further restricted in RA due to commissioning work at the start of the semester. Due to engineering work, GNIRS will not be available until October 6th, and has additional restrictions in RA. The visitor instruments at Gemini North, DSSI and TEXES, also also further restricted in RA, based on their limited availability.
In the North,
- The visitor instruments TEXES and DSSI/Speckle are offered in 2014B.
- GNIRS will not be available until October 6th, to allow for engineering work.
- As in semester 2014A, the R600 grating is not offered for GMOS-North queue programs and is only available for classically-scheduled programs.
In the South,
- FLAMINGOS-2 will be available in imaging and long-slit modes only. See the latest information on delivered image quality on the instrument's Status and Availability page.
- There are no advertised limits to the number of available hours with GSAOI + GeMS, however there are operational limits to the total amount that can be accepted. Observations in IQ85 are possible and are encouraged for programs that can use images with FWHM ~0.2 arcseconds as opposed to the ≤0.1 arcseconds delivered in IQ70 or IQ20. Investigators must continue to check the availability of Guide Star constellations using the Observing Tool before submitting a proposal.
- GPI will be available for shared-risk use in 2014B, after commissioning in is completed in August.
- GMOS-South will feature the new Hamamatsu CCDs, pending successful commissioning in July. Investigators should use the new CCD option in the ITCs for their proposals. As in 2014A, The R600 grating is not offered for queue observations and is only available for classical programs.
