Semester 2018A Time Distribution

Overview

Time available on each of Gemini North and South is distributed according to the Observatory participants' shares. Engineering time is reserved each semester; this includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument commissioning. Any unused engineering time is returned to science. The science time includes time used for all Observing Modes, including standard semester programs (this call), Large and Long programs, Fast Turnaround programs, and Director's Discretionary time. Time for limited-term partners is also reserved from the total science time each semester. The estimated time available for each participant and host institution is shown below. The 2018A time distribution applies no balancing of partner executed time, and assumes that the full 20% of the participating partners' time is used for Large and Long Programs.

Gemini North 2018A

  • 10 nights (5.5%) are reserved for engineering, this includes; commissioning of the Gemini North Toptica laser, engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument maintenance tasks.
  • 171 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 94.5% of the total time available.
  • The science time has been distributed as follows:

    • 6.0 nights for limited-term collaborations and 7.7 nights for DD time;
    • 1.5 nights for CFHT community, use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for GRACES, distributed as follows: Canada - 6.38 hours, France - 6.38 hours, UH - 4.5 hours (2.25 hours from the North and 2.25 hours from the South);
  • The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.

Participant Estimated Science Time Available (hours) Time Reserved for Fast Turnaround programs (hours) [A] Time Reserved for Large and Long Programs (hours) [B] Estimated Time Available for this Call (hours) [C]
US 980 98 171 711
Canada 267 27 46 200
Brazil 96 10 0 86
Argentina 46 5 8 33
Univ. of Hawaii (host) 170 17 0 157

[A] - 10% of the available time is contributed by all participants and host institutions to the Fast Turnaround program.
[B] - Up to 20% of the available time is contributed by the United States, Canada, and Argentina, to Large and Long Program.
[C] - Approximately 80% of this time is allocated to programs during the ITAC process (~30% in Band 1, ~30% in Band 2 and ~20% in Band 3) as this time also includes weather loss and time lost to faults.

Gemini South 2018A

  • 14 nights (7.7%) are reserved for engineering, this includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, GeMS NGS2 commissioning, and instrument maintenance tasks.
  • 167 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 92.3% of the total time available.
  • The science time has been distributed as follows:

    • 7.5 nights for limited-term collaborations and 6.8 nights for DD time;
    • 15 nights have been reserved for the GPI campaign;
    • 1.5 nights for CFHT community, use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for GRACES, distributed as follows: Canada - 6.38 hours and France - 6.38 hours.
  • The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.
