GEMINI (April2017) Gemini IRAF package v1.14comm GEMINI (April2017) Release date: April 21, 2017 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WARNING: This is a commissioning package for early support of the GMOS North Hamamatsu CCDs. The instrument is still being commissioned and has NOT been fully characterized. Therefore the data reduction scripts have not been scientifically vetted. Use this package at your own risk. It can be used for quality assessment purposes ONLY. We believe that redshift measurements are likely viable, but we do not, and cannot guarantee it at this time. Anything else is not scientifically viable. WARNING: DO NOT USE for anything but GMOS-N Hamamatsu CCD data. If you wish to reduce other Gemini data, please use the stable release, v1.13.1. It can be downloaded as a tar file from our website. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This document describes the current status of the GMOS package with regards to the new GMOS-N Hamamatsu CCD support. All users are requested to use Ureka (http://ssb.stsci.edu/ureka/) to install IRAF. Installation instructions for Ureka users can be found at http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/data-and-results/processing-software/download. This commissioning release is NOT included in Ureka, but Ureka will provide you with all the dependencies. Users can download the Gemini IRAF package gemini_v1.14comm.tar.gz for use with the Ureka version of IRAF v2.16. (Ureka v1.5.2) Please refer to http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/data-and-results/processing-software/requirements for other requirements on your IRAF installation including other required external packages. The Gemini IRAF package v1.14comm should run under both IRAF and PyRAF environments, but it has been only tested on PyRAF. WARNING!! The Gemini IRAF package v1.14comm does NOT work reliably with the 32-bit or 64-bit version of IRAF v2.16 as distributed by NOAO. If updating an older installation of the Gemini IRAF package, it is recommended that users initialize their uparm directories by typing "rm uparm/*" in their iraf home directory (i.e., where mkiraf was executed / where the login.cl file is located). NOTE: if you wish to make a note of any stored parameters, please do so before running this command. The binaries distributed with the package were built on Centos5 (Ureka IRAF 2.16) and Mac OS X 10.6 Intel. See gemini_readme.txt for installation instructions. PRIMARY REVISIONS FOR GMOS PACKAGE ONLY ======================================= Changes to the packages other than GMOS are included in this package but they are not reviewed here. This package MUST NOT be used to reduce data from any other instrument but GMOS-South with Hamamatsu CCDs. 1) GMOS: Added support for GMOS-S Hamamatsu CCDs DETAILS OF THE REVISIONS AND CAVEATS ==================================== Gains and full well: The values are not available yet. Only 1x1 data has reliable gains. Readnoise: The values are not available yet. Only 1x1 data has reliable readnoise values. Bad Pixels Masks (BPMs): The imaging BPMs are available but not quite finalized. The ones included in this commissioning release should be sufficient for quality assessment and quicklook. Quantum Efficiency (QE): The coefficients to correct for QE effects with wavelength and across the chips have NOT been calculated yet. To help with quality assessment and quicklook, the values for GMOS-S Hamamatsu are being used. We can see that those are not correct, but it is still better than not having any correction at all. Overscan: The defaults used to remove the overscan signal have not been verified. The package is set to use the same defaults for GMOS-N Hamamatsu as for the GMOS-S Hamamatsu. It is expected to be close, but again, it has not been verified. Example scripts: The examples in the gemini IRAF package should work fine with the new data. The reduction steps are the same as with the old data. (The examples are located in gmos$doc/ and can be accessed with the "gmosexamples" task.) Getting Help: To get help with this package, please file a HelpDesk ticket to the "Gemini IRAF" category and request that the request be elevated to Tier 2 right away. This will ensure that the request gets to our developers. The Tier 1 NGOs are not currently in a position to help you with this commissioning data reduction package. SUMMARY OF ALL CHANGED PARAMETERS ================================= If a task is causing problems, it is very likely that the task is accessing an old parameter file that does not contain the updated parameters and/or values. To resolve the problem, the old parameter files for the Gemini IRAF package must be removed from the uparm directory. To do this, initialise the uparm directory by typing "rm uparm/*" in your iraf home directory (i.e., where you ran mkiraf / where your login.cl file is located). NOTE: if you wish to make a note of any stored parameters, please do so before running this command. If it is not desirable to remove all the old parameter files for the Gemini IRAF tasks, it is possible to "unlearn" the individual task. There are no parameter updates relative to v1.13.1.
