Introduction to Gemini Data

This section provides an introduction to Gemini data, its file structure, processing, distribution and archiving. See the contents list for further information.

Currently data are distributed to Principal Investigators via electronic means from the Gemini Science Archive. In addition to the raw data, the GSA contains observing logs, calibrations specific to the science program, and weather station data for the relevant night(s). The GSA will soon also contain pipeline processed data used for quality assessment. In addition, a calibration query page at GSA allows users to find calibrations for their data that were taken under other programs.

When data is acquired by one of the Gemini telescopes, it is made available at the GSA in as short a time as possible. Once a significant amount of data has been acquired under a program, a Gemini staff member will trigger an electronic distribution. This trigger send e-mail to the PI (using the Phase 2 OT e-mail address) copied to the NGO and Gemini contact scientists. This informs the PI of availability of a new package. A link is given in the e-mail and this takes the PI to a page which allows them to generate a package of data files for on-line access. Once this package is generated, another e-mail gives a link to the download site of the data itself.

In the cases where electronic transfer of data is not possible (e.g. due to slow local networks), contact Gemini for an alternate method of data distribution.

All queries regarding Gemini data should be made through the Gemini HelpDesk.
