Figure 10

An HST image of the debris disk surrounding beta Pic. The disk is viewed via light scattered earthward by circumstellar dust believed produced as a result of planetesimal or cometesimal collissions in a post-planet building circumstellar disk. The occulted region near the center has a diameter of 5 arcsec, corresponding to 80 AU at beta Pic. With a coronagraphic imaging capability at 2 microns, Gemini could probe the structure of the disk to within a few AU of the surface of beta Pic.
