Getting to the Center: Big Island teachers and Gemini Observatory staff discuss the findings Tuesday (November 5, 2002) at the Galactic Center Workshop entitled "The Central 300 Parsecs" under way November 4-8 at the Keauhou Beach Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i. A look at the latest research being done on the core of the Milky Way, including the1-million-mile-wide black hole at our Galaxy's center, the conference is being attended by more than 100 astronomers and astrophysicists from around the world.

As a service to the Big Island community, Gemini is sponsoring 10 teachers from public and private Big Island schools who also attended the conference to learn more about the latest research in astronomy. Gemini paid for the teachers' substitutes so they would be free to attend the conference and provided each teacher with an astronomer "host" to help them appreciate the more than 50 research papers being presented.

Discussing the conference over the Tuesday lunch break, they are (from left) Dr. Tom Geballe, Senior Gemini Astronomer; Beth Branson, 8-9th grade science and math teacher at Hualalai Academy; Janice Harvey, from the Gemini Outreach office; Sarah Etherington, elementary teacher at Hawaii Montessori; Tracy Beck, astronomer and Gemini Science Fellow; Mary Kate Powers, 8th grade history teacher at Kealekehe Intermediate School; and Dr. Scott Fisher, astronomer and Gemini Science Fellow.
