Colin received his BSc with Honors in `Physics & Astrophysics' from Leicester University, England in 1977, his MSc in `Astrophysics' from Sussex University, England in 1978 and his PhD in `Astronomy' from the Glasgow University, Scotland in 1981.
From 1981 to 1984, Colin was a Research Fellow at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Scotland working on a travelling optical CCD based Imaging-Spectropolarimeter. From 1984 to 1986 Colin worked on fabication of the near-IR camera IRCAM for UKIRT in the tenured position of Higher Scientific Officer in SERC.
From 1986 to 1996, Colin was posted to the UKIRT in Hawaii as both an Higher Scientific Officer and later a Senior Scientific Officer. He support visiting astronomers in the use of facility instruments including near-IR and mid-IR imagers and spectrometers.
From 1996 to 1998, Colin was the Senior Staff Astronomer at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) on La Palma, Canary Islands where he worked on the design and fabrication of a 1-2.5um imager/spectrograph for the NOT telescope as well as supporting visiting astronomers.
From August 1998 to April 2001, Colin was the Senior UK Gemini Support Astronomer working at the UK Gemini Headquarters at Oxford University, England from August 1998 to August 1999 and then at the Gemini Observatory, Hilo, HI from September 1999 to April 2001.
