Semester 2016B Time Distribution

Overview

Time available on each of Gemini North and South is distributed according to the Observatory partners' shares. To maintain overall balance amongst the partnership, the time available to each partner is adjusted each semester as a result of actual time charged in prior semesters. Engineering time is reserved each semester; this potentially includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument commissioning. Any unused engineering time is returned to science. The science time includes time used for all Observing Modes, including standard semester programs (this call), Large and Long programs, Fast Turnaround programs, and Director's Discretionary time. Time for limited-term partnerships is also reserved from the total science time each semester. The estimated time available for each partner and host institution is shown below.

GEMINI NORTH 2016B:

  • 16.5 nights are reserved for engineering, including a 10 night shutdown.
  • 167.5 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 91% of the total time available.
  • The science time has been distributed as follows:
    • 14.3 nights have been reserved for DD time, and time for the Korea and Australia limited-term partnerships;
    • 2 nights have been reserved for SV of new instrument modes.;
    • The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.

[A] - 10% of the available time is reserved from all partners and host institutions for the Fast Turnaround program
[B] - 20% of the available time is reserved from participating partners, the United States, Canada, and Argentina, for Large and Long Programs.
[C] - The remaining science time available is available to regular semester proposals for queue and classical observations. Approximately 80% of this time is allocated to programs during the ITAC process as this time also includes weather loss and time lost to faults.

GEMINI SOUTH 2016B

  • 25 nights are reserved for engineering, including a 10 night shutdown.
  • 159 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 86% of the total time available.
  • The science time has been distributed as follows:
    • 13.3 nights have been reserved for DD time, and time for the Korea and Australia limited-term partnerships;
    • 15 nights have been reserved for the GPI campaign;
    • 1 night has been reserved for GSAOI Guaranteed time;
    • The Table below shows the distribution of the remaining time available.
