Gemini Sodium Laser Guide Star RFQ

October 5th, 2015

AURA is seeking to replace the current continuous wave (CW) mode-locked 50 Watt laser at the Gemini South facility with a more robust alternative Laser (the subject of this RFQ, hereafter called the “Laser”) providing a photon return equivalent to or greater than currently received by its 5 laser guide star Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics system, GeMS. AURA desires that the new Laser utilize as much as possible of the existing Beam Transfer Optics (BTO) and Laser Launch Telescope (LLT) for projecting the Laser onto the sky, enabling Gemini to switch from the current system to the new system with minimal downtime.

This project is federally funded and requires funder approval, which may require several months to obtain.
