GSAOI Early Release Engineering Data
The datasets listed below were made available as a one time effort to the community in order to enable early evaluation of the format and characteristics of the GeMS+GSAOI data. The data were provided in the form of tar gzipped files, containing the individual standard FITS files as described in the table. Please note that each GSAOI raw, uncompressed, fits file is 67Mb. The gzipped files below will unzip to about twice their indicated size.
With the release of the GSAOI SV data through the Gemini Science Archive, the tar files below are being removed from the Gemini website. If you are interested in these datasets, please contact the Observatory through the Gemini HelpDesk.
Users must be aware that these are ENGINEERING
DATASETS, obtained with the sole purpose of GeMS
performance optimization. The observations were
not designed for achieving a science goal, although that
does not preclude the data from having some science
value. Please note the following when requesting/using these datasets:
- Data are provided "as is". Although the commissioning team may decide to observe again these same objects in the future as part of further commissioning activities, we offer no guarantees on the possibility of observing other filters or different pointings, nor will we endeavour to make the new data available if by any chance one of these targets is re-observed. Please consider these observations as self-contained and non-repeatable until the instrument is offered to the community (at which point, observations may be requested through the normal time allocation process).
- As the data were obtained at the same time the instrument and GeMS were being commissioned, there may be inconsistencies on the header content of the files. No attempt has been made to correct those.
- The Gemini IRAF/PyRAF data reduction package for GSAOI is not yet available. Users must employ their own tools to reduce and analyse the data.
- NO SUPPORT for data reduction will be provided. Please refer to the GSAOI pages for information on the instrument, filter characteristics, etc.

NGC 288 Sky:
|Observation of globular
cluster in the H filter obtained to demonstrate
GeMS performance, 2011-12-17UT. The data were
presented in the GeMS press release (2012 Jan 06).
Natural seeing: ~0.6 arcsec. There are two files,
Object and Sky, corresponding to a five-positions
dither pattern around the pointing coordinates.
The object and sky dither patterns are different,
and the sky exposures were taken unguided (no
guide stars defined).
Calibrations: H-band twilight flats

|Observations of an open
cluster in the H filter, 2011-12-19UT, under
excellent natural seeing conditions (0.3-0.5
arcsec), obtained for GeMS performance
optimization. No dither pattern applied.
Calibrations: H-band twilight flats (same set as NGC 288)
|NGC 4603 Object:
NGC 4603 Sky:
|Observation of an extended
object (spiral galaxy) in J, H (2012-02-10UT) and
K-short (2012-02-11UT) filters under poorer seeing
conditions (from 0.7 to 1.2 arcsec natural
seeing). The AO corrected images show a PSF with
FWHM between 0.1" (Ks) to 0.25" (J). There are two
files for each filter, Object and Sky,
corresponding to a four-position dither pattern
around the pointing coordinates. The object and
sky dither patterns are the same, but the sky
observations are unguided (loops in FREEZE)
Calibrations: J, H, and K-short dome flats, with the lamps ON and OFF.
