GNIRS Status and Availability Change

GNIRS optical work has been postponed to 2014, see the
Status and Availability page. This means that GNIRS remains on the telescope later in the 13A semester and is expected to be available for science in early August. Also

imaging using GNIRS and the Y filter is not possible, and

the short red camera is not available, until 2014.

Updated 2013B PIT fixes guide star bug

A bug in PIT 2013.2.1 prevents the calculation of guide star availability for the given target, instrument configuration, and weather conditions. This does not prevent proposal submission but it is confusing and undesirable. This problem has been fixed with the release of PIT 2013.2.2 on March 26, 2013. The new PIT can be downloaded from here. The guide star likelihoods will be calculated automatically once a program is loaded into the new PIT.

The latest commissioning and system verification (SV) run for the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) with the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) ended on Saturday, February 2. During this run, the team completed six SV programs and made good progress on another three. In optimal seeing, the first diffraction ring has been visible on point sources, and even in poor seeing, the AO correction is excellent. The next GeMS/GSAOI run is scheduled to start in late February.

Call for GeMS+GSAOI community commissioning targets

a new lens, and implementing a replacement solution that avoids these problems in the future. Unfortunately, this process will take several months. See the FLAMINGOS-2 status and availability page for the most current information.

Updated 2012A OT available

An updated version of the 2012A OT (2012A.1.2.1) is available for download or via the OT update feature. The update is optional but highly recommended since it contains important new features and bug fixes. If installing from the distribution files, rather than auto-updating, then you must export your local database to XML files with the current OT and then import them into the new OT.

Phoenix to be removed in January 2011

Phoenix has been a visitor instrument on Gemini South since the beginning of science operations in 2002. It has been scientifically productive, with an active user community, and the observatory is grateful to NOAO for the long-term loan. However, Gemini is about to commission new Gemini South instrumentation and is actively engaged in a transition to operations without the UK as a partner. Together, these fundamentally limit both available staff effort and instrument ports, and Gemini can no longer afford to offer Phoenix for regular use.

Mac support for 2011A PIT with Java 6

As announced previously, the Gemini software tools are being updated to use the currently supported version of Java (Java 6). The Phase I Tool (PIT) will use Java 6 starting with the 2011A version to be released on September 1, 2010. This change will be transparent to most users. However, the new PIT will not run on PowerPC Macintosh computers since Apple does not provide Java 6 for these machines.

OT and PIT planning update to Java 6

For many years the Gemini Observing Tool (OT) and Phase I Tool (PIT) have been using version 1.5 of the Java language. Java 1.5 has now reached the end of its official service life (see java.sun.com). In order to take advantage of many bug fixes and new features Gemini is planning to move these applications to the current version of Java (version 1.6 or Java 6) starting with the December 2009 OT.

Gemini Board WFMOS Resolution

Message from the Director Regarding WFMOS

By Doug Simons

On May 12-13 the Gemini Board met to discuss, among other topics, the future of the WFMOS project. At this meeting the Observatory provided the Board with a variety of information to support a definitive decision by the Board about proceeding with WFMOS. Regretfully, due to funding limitations, the Board could not support continuing with WFMOS and through this message I am informing the entire Gemini community that the WFMOS project has been terminated.

Gemini North currently accepting poor weather proposals

Gemini North welcomes poor weather proposals .
Note that reliable guiding with the peripheral wave-front sensor (P2) at the optimum frequency requires a star brighter than R~13.5 in clear, dark skies, so in cloudy conditions we can observe only programs with R<11.5 guide-stars. For the GMOS OIWFS the same limit applies. For GMOS-N, only imaging or
R400 and B600 spectroscopic programs will be considered.
