Gemini South Sheds Light on the Origin of Fluorine

Using PHOENIX, a shared instrument on Gemini South, multiple stellar atmospheres have been sampled, revealing tantalizing clues on the formation of fluorine by neutrino interaction during past supernovae explosions of massive stars.

Near-infrared high-resolution PHOENIX spectrum of a red giant star showing a spectral absorption line of the HF molecule (indicated in red) used to derive the abundance of fluorine in the stellar atmosphere. Absorption lines of Na I and CO are also visible as indicated.
