Near-Infrared Images Reveal Structure in Jupiter's Cloudy Atmosphere

HCG87 imaged with GMOS-S

Jupiter was imaged with Gemini's Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) at 1.69 microns in the methane absorption band revealing detailed structure and chemistry of the atmospheric clouds. Two of Jupiter's Galilean moons are also visible in this image. Europa is the bright "star" to the right of Jupiter, and Io is the bright spot projected against the equatorial cloud bands towards the right edge of the disk.

Near-Infrared images reveal structure in Jupiter's cloudy atmosphere high spatial resolution NIRI images taken in the 1.69-micron methane absorption band expose the detailed structure and varying chemistry of the clouds high in the Jovian atmosphere.

This still image depicts many of Jupiter's features without the animation. Gemini Observatory photo.
