The "cosmic web" predicted by numerical simulations of formation of structures in the universe. Galaxy clusters would correspond to the red regions.

Gemini, Keck and Subaru Combine Efforts to Study the Assembly of a Large and Distant Galaxy Cluster

Using Gemini's Multi-Object Spectrograph and all of the 8-10 meter-class telescopes on Mauna Kea, a University of Hawaii team has discovered new details in the formation of a distant assembly of galaxies in large galaxy cluster. Funneling of matter reveals filamentary structure as predicted by theoretical predictions of cluster formation.
