Galaxies Under the Cosmic Microscope: a GMOS-North Study of the Lensed Galaxy #289 in A 2218

Using the Integral Field Unit (IFU) on Gemini's Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS), Ph.D. student Mark Swinbank (University of Durham, UK) and his international team observed the internal dynamics of a young, (z=1.07) spiral galaxy. This galaxy's light, which is gravitationally lensed and in the process distorted, was "morphed" to correct for these distortions during the analysis of the hundreds of spectra obtained with the GMOS-IFU.
