'Shooting Star' over Mauna Kea
Credit: Gemini Observatory
This image is one of a sequence from a time lapse movie. Here you can clearly see the 'Big Dipper' rising above the Gemini North dome, and to the left the Pleiades star cluster is above the Subaru (Subaru is the name for that star cluster in Japan) and Keck observatories.
The meteor streaking across the sky is only visible in this one frame of the time lapse movie.
The reason this scene appears so bright is because there was a near-full moon illuminating the image.
